Mosquito control effort to take place in Reading April 22-23
Residents of Reading may notice low-flying helicopters in certain areas this week as part of a targeted mosquito control effort. The East Middlesex Mosquito Control Project (EMMCP) will be conducting a helicopter application of a biological larvicide known as Bti (Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis) to help reduce mosquito populations early in the season.
When & where
The aerial application is scheduled to take place between April 22 and April 23, 2025, weather permitting. The treatment will focus on wetlands and other mosquito breeding grounds in the following areas of Reading:
Brentwood Drive
Fairchild Drive
Lindsey Lane
Main Street/Nelson Avenue
Haverhill Street (near Timberneck Drive)
Symonds Way
Charles Street
A helicopter will apply the larvicide in granular form directly over wetland areas. Residents do not need to take any special precautions during or after the treatment.
About the treatment
Bti is a naturally occurring bacterium found in soil, and is considered relatively non-toxic by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. It is highly specific in targeting mosquito larvae and a few other related aquatic insects, without posing a threat to people, pets, or wildlife.
The product being used is VectoBac GS (EPA Registration #73049-10), which breaks down quickly in the environment, minimizing any lasting impact on surrounding ecosystems.
