Voters elect new local leaders in April 2025 election

Updated April 9, 2025 to include the winner of the Town Moderator race and the link to the unofficial election results on the Town website.


Reading residents went to the polls on Tuesday April 8, 2025, to cast their votes in the town’s annual local election. With competitive races and key ballot decisions, the election drew strong interest from across the community.

Select Board

In the race for two open seats on the Select Board, voters elected:

  • Melissa Murphy, incumbent

  • Karen Rose-Gillis

They will join the five-member board responsible for overseeing town operations, budgeting, and long-term planning.

School Committee

For the School Committee, three candidates competed for two seats. The winners were:

  • Tom Wise, incumbent

  • Lara Durgavich

The committee plays a key role in shaping educational policy and guiding the district’s strategic planning.

RMLD Board of Commissioners

Voters selected:

  • David Talbot, incumbent

  • Adam “Rich” Swanson

to serve on the Reading Municipal Light Department Board of Commissioners, which oversees the town’s electric utility.

Board of Library Trustees

In the race for library trustees, elected candidates are:

  • Patrick Egan, incumbent

  • Kelli Bacon

They will help guide policy and planning for Reading Public Library services and programs.

Town Moderator

Voters re-elected the Town Moderator, who will be responsible for presiding over Town Meeting and ensuring fair and orderly discussion:

  • Alan Foulds, incumbent

Town Meeting

Dozens of residents were also elected or re-elected to Town Meeting, the town’s legislative body. Town Meeting members vote on the annual budget, bylaws, and other important issues that affect the future of Reading. Voter turnout

Preliminary reports show voter turnout was approximately 21.3%, reflecting a decrease from last year’s local election (35.6%).
