Reading residents to vote on two major building projects May 13
(2-3 minute read)
The Reading Select Board has placed two important debt exclusion questions on the ballot for the upcoming Special Election on Tuesday, May 13, 2025. In accordance with Massachusetts State Law, cost amounts cannot be listed directly on the ballot. However, residents are encouraged to learn about each proposal and their potential impact before heading to the polls.
Both Initiatives represent significant investments in Reading’s future - enhancing educational opportunities and supporting community services for residents of all ages.

Article 1: Killam School Building Project
Article 1 asks residents to approve funding for the replacement of the Killam Elementary School, which has not been renovated or improved since its construction in 1968. The project is part of the Massachusetts State Building Authority (MSBA) program, securing over $44 million in state contributions towards the new school’s construction costs.
A new Killam School would address critical infrastructure needs, offer modern learning environments, and better serve the growing student population.

Article 2 seeks approval to fund the construction of the new Reading Center for Active Living (ReCAL), which would replace the aging Pleasant Street Center - Reading’s current senior center.
The ReCAL facility is designed to serve not only the 60+ community but also all residents by providing expanded spaces for Elder & Human Services, Recreation, and Veterans Services. It would create a vibrant community hub promoting connection, wellness, and engagement across generations.
