Rainy day, big impact: community turns out for Annual Bike Giveaway

Neither rain nor chilly weather could dampen the spirit of community this past Saturday, as families, volunteers, and local organizations gathered for Reading’s annual Bike Recycling and Giveaway Event.
Hosted in partnership with the Reading Police Department, Reading Cares, Reading Climate Advisory Committee, and the Reading Municipal Light Department (RMLD), this year’s event marked its biggest turnout yet, with more than 170 bikes donated to children and families in the community.
The wet weather didn’t stop the smiles.

“Rain or shine, community comes first,” shared the Reading Police Department in a Facebook post. Officers were on hand throughout the day, fitting children with free helmets and sharing tips on bike safety. “We’re proud to work with our partners to promote safety and wellness for our youngest residents.”

RMLD graciously provided the event space, transforming their lot into a hub of activity as dozens of volunteers helped match kids with bikes, made necessary tune-ups, and handed out helmets and safety materials. Parents, children, and supporters baved the rain to ensure no bikes went unused and no child went without a chance to ride.
“This event is about more than just bikes,” said a volunteer. “It’s about giving kids freedom, confidence, and a healthy way to explore their world.”
Special thanks go out to everyone who donated a bike, rolled up their sleeves to help, or simply showed up to be part of something positive for the community.
