Select Board Race

The Select Board acts as the executive body of our local government and oversees to the town’s operation and managing municipal affairs.

The Select Board establishes town policies to ensure they align with community needs; oversees the Town Manager regarding day-to-day operations; works with town administrators to manage and approve the budget; hire key personnel; and represents residents, holds public meetings, and responds to local concerns.

School Committee Race

The School Committee is the governing body responsible for overseeing Reading’s public schools to ensure the school system operates effectively and in the best interest of students, families, and the community.

The primary responsibilities for the School Committee include establishing policies that guide the operation of the school district; supervises and directs the superintendent regarding the daily school operations; develops and approves the school budget; review and approve major curriculum changes an academic policies; and oversees building maintenance and long-term planning.

Reading Municipal Lights Department (RMLD) Board of Commisioners Race

The RMLD Board of Commissioners oversees the operation and management of the town’s publicly owned electric utility that serves Reading and three surrounding communities.

RMLD establishes policies and ensures they align with community needs; reviews and approves electricity rates; ensures the maintenance and improvement of infrastructure for safe and reliable service; and addresses customer concerns, promotes energy efficiency programs, and engages with the public.

Board of Library Trustees Race

The Board of Library Trustees (BoLT) is responsible for overseeing the operation, policies, and strategic direction of the town’s library.

BoLT establishes library policies on services, operations, and community engagement; reviews and approves the library’s budget; oversees an evaluates the performance of the library director who manages daily operations; promotes the library’s role in the community; and oversees the maintenance and improvements to library facilities.

Town Meeting Races

(Vote for 8 in your precinct)

Town Meeting is the legislative body of the town that is responsible for making important decisions on budgets, bylaws, and policies. Reading has an elected Town Meeting with 24 representatives from each precinct.

Town Meeting reviews and votes on the town’s annual budget to determine how tax dollars are spent; debates and approves local laws, zoning changes, and town policies; decides on major expenditures; and considers proposals from residents on local issues and initiatives.
