LtE: Pickleball

Reading has lots of recreation options for young and even middle-aged residents. We have facilities and teams for football, lacrosse, soccer, flag football, basketball, baseball, softball, and tennis. For the most part, older people don’t or can’t play those sports. But most of us can play pickleball, which is fantastic for our physical and mental health. Yet we don’t have spaces set aside for pickleball, except for two tennis courts that the Town allows us to share with tennis players. There are four courts near the high school that are unsuitable and, anyway, will be withdrawn soon.

Funding to create courts specifically for pickleball is up for a vote shortly. Supporters have raised about $200K to jump-start the project. It would be great if the Town could get behind the effort and get this done. We seniors will be most appreciative.

Paul Devlin, a resident for 35 years
