Scoop the poop: keep our town clean and waterways safe

Did you know that improperly disposing of dog waste can have serious environmental and public health consequences? Tossing dog waste into storm drains or catch basins sends harmful bacteria and pollutants directly into wetlands, streams, and even drinking water sources.

The importance of picking up after your pet

The town’s General By-Laws require pet owners to clean up after their dogs in all public areas and on others’ private property. Failure to do so isn’t just inconsiderate - it’s a hazard to both the community and the environment. Dog waste:

  • Attracts flies and pests

  • Spreads harmful bacteria and disease

  • Contributes significantly to water pollution

Every dog produces an average of 3/4-lb of waste per day. If left uncontrolled, this waste washes into storm drains and contaminates local waterways, harming fish, vegetation, and drinking water quality.

How to properly dispose of dog waste

Being a responsible pet owner is easy! Just follow these steps:

  1. Carry waste bags whenever you take your pet for a walk.

  2. Use the bag like a glove to pick up the waste.

  3. Turn the bag inside out, enclosing the waste, and tie it securely shut.

  4. Dispose of the bag in a trash can - never in a storm drain or catch basin, and not in your neighbor’s trash barrel.

By simply scooping the poop, you help keep our community clean, protect public health, and preserve our local environment. Let’s all do our part - because every small action makes a big difference!
