RMLD’s annual art contest: submit your entry by April 15

Each year, the Reading Municipal Light Department (RMLD) hosts an electricity-themed art contest for high school students in Reading, North Reading, Wilmington, and Lynnfield Center. The 2025 contest, launched on February 1, revolves around the theme ‘Innovation in Energy’.

A platform for creativity

The contest welcomes a variety of artistic expressions, including drawings, paintings, photography, animation, and graphic art. Students are encouraged to showcase their creativity while reflecting on the ever-revolving world of energy innovation.

As a reward for their participation, each student will receive a certificate recognizing 10 hours of community service. Winners will be awarded gift cards for school or art supplies, along with the unique opportunity to have their artwork featured in RMLD’s promotional materials.

Theme: innovation in energy

Innovation has continuously shaped the energy industry, from the advent of the light bulb to advancements in renewable energy, electric vehicles, and smart grids. This year’s contest challenges students to capture the essence of energy innovation through their art.

Here are some thought-provoking ideas to consider:

  • What does innovation mean to our community and the world?

  • How has innovation shaped the history of energy?

  • How will innovation help achieve our collective energy goals?

  • What might the future of energy look like?

Students are encouraged to explore these questions or develop their own interpretations of the theme. Research and bold artistic expression are highly encouraged!

Contest details

  • Who can enter? All enrolled high school students (Grades 9 - 12) residing in Reading, North Reading, Wilmington, or Lynnfield within RMLD’s service area.

With Energy constantly evolving, this contest provides students with an exciting way to engage with the future of electricity through art. RMLD looks forward to seeing the creative visions of young artists as they bring the spirit of energy innovation to life!
