(2-3 minute read)
The Reading Police Department is reminding residents and students to prioritize safety as the annual “Senior Assassin” game, involving Reading Memorial High School seniors, officially began on May 7.
What is Senior Assassin?
Senior Assassin is a long-running game typically played by high school seniors in which participants are assigned targets and attempt to eliminate them using water guns.
While the game has existed for many years, officials say the scale of participation has increased, creating situations that can appear suspicious and sometimes result in calls to the police.
Police concerns
According to the Reading Police Department, activity associated with the game may include:
Trespassing on private property
Suspicious behavior in neighborhoods
Loitering
Erratic vehicle operation
Officials noted that these situations can create unnecessary concern for residents and lead to emergency responses.
Safety guidelines for participants
Police are asking students to use common sense and follow several safety precautions while participating:
Stay off private property unless permission has been granted
Do NOT involve vehicles in any way
NO chasing cars
NO shooting from or at vehicles
NO following or approaching vehicles
Use only brightly colored water guns that cannot be mistaken for real weapons
Avoid sneaking around neighborhoods or playing late at night
Leave any uncomfortable situation immediately if it feels unsafe or uncomfortable
Reminder for residents
Residents are also being asked to remain aware that the game is taking place.
If suspicious activity is observed, officials advise residents:
Do NOT confront individuals directly
Contact the Reading Police Department instead by calling 781-944-1212
Keeping the game safe
Police emphasized that the goal is not to stop students from enjoying the tradition, but to ensure it is done safely and responsibly.
Officials are asking both participants and residents to work together to help avoid misunderstandings and keep the community safe.
