Calling all creatives: help transform Downtown Reading with public art, deadline Thursday

The Town of Reading is kicking off a dynamic new public art initiative - and you could be a part of it!

Thanks to state funding, Reading is seeking sculptures, models, casts, and other engaging art installations to enhance key locations across the downtown district. The goal? To bring color, creativity, and fun to public spaces - inviting residents and visitors alike to explore, linger, and support our local community.

What’s the plan?

Art installations will be placed in high-visibility areas, including:

  • Downtown Common

  • Elm Park

  • Haven Street Corridor

  • High Street Corridor/Train Depot

Artists are encouraged to submit either a single large sculpture or a series of smaller works. Bonus points for proposals that create a cohesive experience and encourage people to walk, explore, and discover surprises around town.

What is the town looking for?

Reading is looking for family-friendly, imaginative, and interactive designs that help bring Downtown to life. Successful submissions will:

  • Be original and unique to the artist

  • Use creativity, color, and visual appeal

  • Be inviting and encourage community engagement

This is your opportunity to think boldly and brightly!

Material guidelines & durability

To ensure safety and seasonal maintenance, sculptures must:

  • Have no sharp or hazardous components

  • Durable and able to withstand New England weather from spring through fall

  • Be removable for winter storage

Artists may explore a range of materials, but all submissions should be built to last and require minimal maintenance.
